wow guys!! i'm really enjoying this meta conversation. it's true we deliberately designed the lack of likes. what i didn't expect was that the reply feature would be used so often, but it makes sense since it's literally the only way you can interact with a post. turns out humans desire to interact with one other? who knew??

another thing that wasn't intended was for everybody to have notifications enabled, which makes the place feel even less slow. and because reply posts are globally notifying and stack on the feed, it can start to feel like there is that competition again, or like emma said, this feeling that you're ignoring someone's post.

one option, maybe, is to add a comment system? a reply that only notifies the person they're replying to, and doesn't appear in the feed. but i think this runs into the same 'potentially competitive' problem that like counters have.

alternatively: we could add an option to posts that disables notification, like a checkbox that says "don't notify people about this post" or "only notify [person i'm replying to]."

or maybe an interaction which is more functional, like bookmarks, so that the place feels more welcoming to long and/or thoughtful posts and it doesn't feel like anyone will get buried. these wouldn't have to be publicly counted.

hmm... i'm really just spitballing. i do like the simplicity of how it is now.

"a checkbox that says 'don't notify people about this post' or 'only notify [person i'm replying to].'"

↑ this will open up possibilities of this platform being used as a place for underlords to meet and discuss scandalous matters so i don't like it

also creates a possibility for spams to go undetected. massive security flaw.

we already have thread indexing and platform-wide indexing. i don't think it's a problem.

No, I like it when I get notified by someone replying to someone else.

I have also grown very fond of the main timeline having everything on the same level, it's messy in a fun way and when multiple conversations have happened at the same time, it's cool to have to piece back convos together

I don't wanna miss a single post, even if I have nothing to do with it.
